Non-Commissionable Plans - United Healthcare 😯

There were several Carriers who pulled commissions from plans during last year’s AEP (Cigna, Anthem & Aetna).

Post AEP these types of changes have continued.

Why? The primary reason for MA plans pulling commissions, is to slow sales on those particular plans. Carriers really don’t have any other levers (besides suppressing enrollment like Elevance did).

And now, United Healthcare removed commission from several of their plans as of July 1 (link).

Note: removal of commissions only applies to new sales going forward (not renewals on previously sold plans).

It’s no secret that UnitedHealth Group ( $UNH ( ▼ 4.24% ) ) has been struggling (link) after growing enrollment the most this past AEP (link).

Anytime United makes a move like this, it’s a big deal. They are the market leader in the MA market, and others tend to follow what they do.

In order to determine how big of a move this is, I always like to look at data.

In particular, it’s helpful to analyze the current enrollment on the plans where commissions are being removed.

Below is what I found.
